Unitards and a sore calf

Run: 2.1 miles Bike: 11.3 miles Run: 2.1 miles Bike: 11.3 miles Run: 2.1 miles

Last weekend went well. I made it through my first Triathlon Club of San Diego race alright. I showed up pretty early to the race and everybody was getting set up at the transition area. About ten minutes before the race I took a look around and almost all the guys had stripped their clothes off and were standing there in the cold in brightly colored unitards. I am not sure if any of you people been in a situation where there are sixty guys surrounding you in unitards (and I don't want to know about it if you have), but it is a pretty wierd sight.

Once the gun went off these sixty unitard wearding triathletes started sprinting. I began with a nice, steady jog. I took a look around a few minutes later only to realize that I was surrounded by only women. All the unitards had taken off and left me with the slower women runners. Although I really didn't mind being surrounded by women even if it meant that I was in last place. I think only one guy finished behind me and he was limping and complaining about his "cramped calf" the whole time. Apparently he needed an excuse to come in when I did. I guess those unitards really work b/c they kicked my ass in the race.

I have the Bulldog bike race on Camp Pendelton this weekend. It is a 26 mile bike ride through the military base. Should be fun...

Duathlon on Saturday

I have gotten myself involved in a Duathlon on Saturday. It sounds pretty fun. The race starts out with a 2.3 mile run, then an 11.3 mile bike ride, then a 2.3 mile run, then an 11.3 mile bike ride, then a 2.3 mile run. Run, bike, run, bike, run... Then they give us breakfast burritos and juice. Delicious.

Tonight is spinnng!!!

Surfing and running

Surf: 1 Run: 8 miles

I surfed Hospitals in La Jolla on Sunday. It was about head high and pretty heavy. Felt good to be back in the ocean. I didn't get in any training on Monday b/c it rained so hard all day. I feel like I will be ready come race day but could probably be training a little harder.

I went for an 8 mile run last night after work. It was a little strange running in the dark but it seemed to make the run go by quicker. Back to the gym tonight and spinning tomorrow.

Good weekend of training

Bike: 61.8 miles Run: 6 miles

I had a really good weekend of training. I rode in the Tour de Palm Springs on Saturday and went for a 6 mile run on Monday.

I got to the bike ride pretty early so that I could find good parking. There were around 10,000 people in the ride. After I parked I took off on my bike to find the start line. I was riding for a while when I realized I was definitely going the wrong way. When I finally got to the start line I was already around 5 - 6 miles in. That made the 55 mile ride a 61.8 miler. The ride wasn't so bad. I could have run after the race if I had to, but I sure wouldn't have wanted to. I am not quite sure how I am going to fit a 1.2 mile swim in before the ride and a 13.1 mile run after the ride.

No substitutes (especially Aussies)

Kristan and I went to the spinning class at the La Jolla 24 hour last night. There was a substitute instructor. She was Australian and she was gnarly. Usually we do a drill for about four or five mintues and then take a nice, well-deserved little break before our next push. Well, apparently they don't work this way Down Under. She had us go full steam ahead telling us all the while that there will be the "mother of all breaks in forty minutes...now pedal!!!". To be honest, I was a little frightened of her.

At the forty minute mark I took a sigh, sat up and was looking forward to this mother of all breaks. Fifteen seconds later..."alright you guys gear up 'cause here we go". Now I've never experienced the mother of all breaks, but I was pretty sure that wasn't it. Kristan and I made it through red-faced, sweaty and beat up by this Australian maniac spinning instructor.

I thought the class might be a nice little warm-up to tomorrows ride. Now I'm not so sure... I hope my legs make it through tomorrow.

Getting back into the swing of things

Well, I am finally getting back into the training groove. I went for a five mile run on Tuesday and am going to my weekly spinning class tonight.

I am heading out to the desert this weekend for the Tour de Palm Springs bike ride. I am looking forward to it. The ride is 55 miles, which will be my longest ride yet. There are stops along the way if I can't make it, but I should be fine.

I have two three-day weekends in a row. I plan on doing nothing but training for the next eight weeks, so it will be nice to have the extra days to put in some long milage. I need to get my ass in the pool and put in some miles.
